About Me

About Julie Weissman Steinbaugh

Hi, I’m Julie Weissman Steinbaugh—writer, advocate, wife, and mom living in Las Vegas. Born with cerebral palsy, I’ve spent my life navigating a world not always designed for people like me, while challenging stereotypes and fighting for equality along the way.

I grew up in Roslyn, New York, where I became the first physically disabled student to attend my local high school. My love for advocacy began in eighth grade when Newsday published my letter to the editor, calling out the harmful portrayal of disabled people by the Cerebral Palsy Telethon. That moment sparked a lifelong passion for using words to drive change.

At 18, I moved to Berkeley, California—the heart of the independent living movement for people with disabilities. I earned my BA in English from the University of California, Berkeley, and my MA in Special Education from San Francisco State University.

Today, I serve on Nevada’s Statewide Independent Living Council, working to ensure equal opportunities for people with disabilities. When I’m not writing or advocating, you can find me spending time with my husband and teenage daughter or enjoying the vibrant Las Vegas community.
